In Chinese tradition, “gold ingots” (jīn yuánbǎo) burned during ancestor worship are symbolic offerings made of paper, not real metal. They represent wealth sent to deceased ancestors in the afterlife.

People burn these paper ingots during rituals such as funerals, Qingming Festival (Tomb-Sweeping Day), and Ghost Festival. The act is based on the belief that the spirit world functions similarly to the human world, where money and material goods are still needed.
